Halqa health circles formally launched in the city of Marrakech, Morocco in 2016. Its foundation was upon the hard work and handiwork of many that came before and has blossomed from its simple beginnings to bring health, hope, and transformation to individuals, families, and communities around the globe.

What is a “Halqa” ?

A حلقة “halqa” is the Arabic term for ring or circle. It is also used to describe a discussion-based learning gathering, often times religious, but not necessarily. In Marrakech, Morocco, tellers of tales in the town square gather “halqas” around them as they dramatically share stories. We chose “halqa” as the name for our health circles to capture the idea of we are all coming together around a captivating story to learn and discuss.
Maybe you were asking more practically?? It is a small gathering of women around a health topic that is facilitated but not taught towards to goal of each participant engaging, implementing and sharing the lesson with others.

What do you mean by “holistic” ?

We use “holistic” to acknowledge the interconnected nature of our lives physically, emotionally, relationally, and spiritually. As well as to indicate that our lessons reflect a wide range of topics covering more tangible needs like: nutrition and vaccines, and branching into more complex relational and emotional health topics like: mental health, healthy relationships, and child safe guarding.

What languages are the lessons currently in?

The majority of the lessons can be found in English, Moroccan Arabic, and Hindi. A growing number of lessons can be found in French, Swahili, and Spanish.
